Artist Statement

My work in this very important “Be a Water Hero” exhibit is a multi-media fiber piece designed to deliver a visual message to you, the observer. That message is to show the importance of caring for our lakes and seas around the world.

I chose to accomplish this by showing coral reefs that are healthy, but beginning to show the stress of climate change on plant life. The white coloration on the plants in the reefs represents deteriorating plant life that has lost color, which is called bleaching. Climate change causes the coral to bleach and wither, causing less nutritious food for the one million aquatic species living and depending on this food source in our seas presently.

I also chose to demonstrate the effects pollutants have on fish as they approach coral reefs for sustenance. Pollutants such as oil spills and plastic matter of all kinds endanger fish and food risking the lives of all living organisms.

My piece is acrylic paint on unprimed canvas, plastic mesh, and fiber.
